Vaginoplasty
Vaginoplasty (pronounced: vaj-uh-no-plas-tee) is a surgical procedure that aims to construct or reconstruct a vagina. It is a part of genital reconstruction surgery and can be performed for various medical reasons, including gender confirmation surgery, congenital disorders, and cancer treatments.
Etymology
The term "vaginoplasty" is derived from the Latin "vagina," meaning sheath or scabbard, and the Greek "plastikē," meaning the art of modelling or sculpting.
Procedure
Vaginoplasty involves the creation or reshaping of the vagina. The specific techniques used can vary depending on the patient's needs and the surgeon's expertise. In some cases, skin grafts from other parts of the body, such as the thigh or abdomen, may be used to create the vaginal lining. In other cases, sections of the colon may be used.
