Health effects from noise

Health effects from noise (pronunciation: /hɛlθ ɪˈfɛkts frɒm nɔɪz/) are a range of negative impacts on human health and well-being caused by exposure to high levels of noise.

Etymology

The term "noise" comes from the Latin word "nausea," meaning seasickness. The term "health effects" is derived from the Old English "hǣlth," meaning wholeness, being whole, sound or well, and "effect," which comes from the Latin "effectus," meaning accomplishment or performance.

Definition

Noise, in this context, refers to unwanted or harmful outdoor and indoor sounds created by human activities, including traffic, aircraft, industrial processes, and neighborhood disturbance. The health effects from noise include both direct and indirect impacts on physical and mental health.

Direct Health Effects

Direct health effects from noise include hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. Prolonged exposure to high levels of noise can lead to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), a type of sensorineural hearing loss. Tinnitus, a condition characterized by the perception of noise or ringing in the ears, can also be caused by exposure to loud noise. Hyperacusis is an increased sensitivity to normal environmental sounds.

Indirect Health Effects

Indirect health effects from noise include stress, sleep disturbance, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues. Chronic exposure to noise can lead to increased stress levels, which can in turn contribute to a range of health problems including heart disease and mental health disorders. Noise can also disrupt sleep, leading to a range of health and well-being issues.
