Gotham City is a fictional city appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, best known as the home of Batman. The city was first identified as Batman's place of residence in Batman #4 (December 1940) and has since been the primary setting for stories featuring the character.

History[edit]

Gotham City was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. The name "Gotham" was first used by Washington Irving in his Salmagundi papers (1807), where he referred to New York City as Gotham. The name was later adopted by DC Comics for Batman's home.

Geography[edit]

Gotham City is located in the northeastern United States, traditionally depicted as being in the state of New Jersey. The city is characterized by its dark, gothic architecture and its high crime rate. It is often portrayed as being close to Metropolis, the home of Superman.
