Carmine Michael Infantino (May 24, 1925 – April 4, 2013) was an American comic book artist and editor. He is best known for his work on The Flash and for his role in the creation of the Silver Age of Comic Books.
Early Life[edit]
Infantino was born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a family of Italian descent. He attended the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan, where he honed his skills in illustration.
Career[edit]
Infantino began his career in the early 1940s, working for various publishers including Timely Comics and Quality Comics. He gained prominence in the 1950s when he started working for DC Comics.
The Flash[edit]
Infantino is perhaps best known for his work on The Flash. He co-created the Barry Allen version of the character, which debuted in Showcase #4 in 1956. This issue is widely considered to mark the beginning of the Silver Age of Comic Books.
Batman[edit]
In the 1960s, Infantino was instrumental in revitalizing the Batman franchise. He redesigned the character's look and worked on several key issues of Detective Comics.
Editorial and Publishing Roles[edit]
In the 1970s, Infantino took on editorial and publishing roles at DC Comics. He served as the company's editorial director and later as its publisher. During his tenure, he oversaw the publication of several landmark series and helped to modernize the company's approach to storytelling and character development.
Awards and Recognition[edit]
Infantino received numerous awards throughout his career, including the National Cartoonists Society Award, the Inkpot Award, and the Eisner Award. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2000.
Death[edit]
Carmine Infantino passed away on April 4, 2013, in Manhattan, New York City.
