Fairlife
Fairlife is a brand of ultra-filtered milk distributed by The Coca-Cola Company. The brand was founded in 2012 and is known for its high protein and low sugar content compared to regular milk. Fairlife products are produced using a patented cold-filtration process that separates the milk into its five main components: water, vitamins and minerals, lactose, protein, and fat. This process allows for the recombination of these components in different proportions to create a variety of milk products.
History
Fairlife was co-founded by Mike McCloskey and his wife Sue McCloskey, who are also the founders of Select Milk Producers. The brand was launched in 2012 and quickly gained popularity due to its unique filtration process and nutritional benefits. In 2014, The Coca-Cola Company acquired a minority stake in Fairlife, and by 2020, Coca-Cola had acquired full ownership of the brand.
Products
Fairlife offers a range of dairy products, including:
- Fairlife Ultra-Filtered Milk: Available in whole, 2%, fat-free, and chocolate varieties. This milk is higher in protein and calcium and lower in sugar compared to regular milk.
- Fairlife YUP!: A line of flavored milks targeted at younger consumers.
- Fairlife Core Power: A high-protein milkshake designed for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
- Fairlife Smart Snacks: A line of snack-sized beverages that combine milk with oats and honey for a nutritious snack option.
- Fairlife Nutrition Plan: A meal replacement shake that is high in protein and low in sugar.
Production Process
Fairlife's unique cold-filtration process involves separating milk into its individual components and then recombining them in different proportions. This allows for the removal of lactose and the addition of more protein and calcium. The process also results in a longer shelf life for the products.
Controversies
In 2019, Fairlife faced significant backlash after an undercover investigation revealed instances of animal abuse at Fair Oaks Farms, one of its suppliers. The company responded by cutting ties with the farm and implementing stricter animal welfare policies.
Nutritional Information
Fairlife milk is marketed as a healthier alternative to regular milk due to its higher protein and calcium content and lower sugar levels. It is also lactose-free, making it suitable for individuals with lactose intolerance.
Marketing and Distribution
Fairlife products are widely available in the United States and Canada. The brand has been marketed through various channels, including television commercials, social media campaigns, and partnerships with fitness influencers.
