Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola (pronunciation: /ˌkoʊ.kəˈkoʊ.lə/) is a carbonated soft drink manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company. Originally intended as a patent medicine, it was invented in the late 19th century by John Stith Pemberton.

Etymology

The name Coca-Cola is derived from two primary ingredients, the coca leaf and the kola nut. The "Coca" part of the name comes from the coca leaf, which was originally a key ingredient in the beverage. The "Cola" part comes from the kola nut, another key ingredient that contributed to the drink's flavor and provided caffeine.

Ingredients

Coca-Cola's main ingredients are carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, and caffeine.

  • Carbonated water - This is water into which carbon dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved, a process that causes the water to become effervescent.
  • High fructose corn syrup - This is a sweetener made from corn starch that has been processed by glucose isomerase to convert some of its glucose into fructose.
  • Caramel color - This is a water-soluble food coloring. It is made by heat treatment of carbohydrates, in general in the presence of acids, alkalis, or salts, in a process called caramelization.
  • Phosphoric acid - This is a weak acid with the chemical formula H₃PO₄. It is used in the food industry as an acidity regulator and flavoring agent.
  • Natural flavors - These are complex mixtures created by specially trained food chemists known as flavorists. In the US, a substance can be labeled as a "natural flavor" if it originates from a plant or animal source.
  • Caffeine - This is a central nervous system stimulant of the methylxanthine class. It is the world's most widely consumed psychoactive drug.
