American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is a professional organization in the United States that represents the interests of orthodontists. The AAO was established in 1900 and has grown to become the world's largest association of orthodontic specialists.

History[edit]

The American Association of Orthodontists was founded in 1900 by a group of orthodontists who recognized the need for a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of orthodontics. The AAO was the first dental specialty organization in the United States.

Membership[edit]

Membership in the AAO is open to orthodontic specialists who have completed an accredited orthodontic residency program. The AAO currently has over 18,000 members, including orthodontists from the United States and around the world.

Mission and Goals[edit]

The mission of the AAO is to advance the art and science of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, improve the health of the public by promoting quality orthodontic care, and support the successful practice of orthodontics. The AAO achieves these goals through education, research, and advocacy.

Education and Research[edit]

The AAO provides a variety of educational resources for its members, including continuing education courses, scientific journals, and an annual conference. The AAO also supports research in orthodontics through its foundation, the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF).

Advocacy[edit]

The AAO advocates for the interests of its members and the orthodontic profession at the local, state, and national levels. This includes lobbying for legislation and regulations that benefit orthodontists and their patients, and promoting public awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment.
