Spondyloarthropathy

Spondyloarthropathy (pronounced spon-dy-lo-ar-throp-athy) is a term used to describe a group of diseases that share common features, primarily inflammation of the spine and other joints. The term is derived from the Greek words 'spondylos' meaning vertebra, 'arthro' meaning joint, and 'pathy' meaning disease.

Types

There are several types of spondyloarthropathies, including:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis: This is the most common type, characterized by inflammation and pain in the spine and sacroiliac joints.
  • Psoriatic arthritis: This type is associated with the skin condition psoriasis and can affect any part of the body.
  • Reactive arthritis: This type occurs as a reaction to an infection in the body.
  • Enteropathic arthritis: This type is associated with inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of spondyloarthropathies include:

  • Pain and stiffness, especially in the lower back and buttocks
  • Fatigue
  • Inflammation of the eyes
  • Skin rashes
  • Diarrhea and stomach pain (in cases of enteropathic arthritis)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of spondyloarthropathies typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as X-rays and MRIs. Blood tests may also be used to check for markers of inflammation and genetic markers associated with these conditions.

Treatment

Treatment for spondyloarthropathies typically involves a combination of medication, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. Medications used may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologic agents.
