Residency (medicine)
Residency (medicine)
Residency (pronounced: /ˈrezɪdənsi/), in the field of medicine, refers to a stage of graduate medical education. It follows the completion of a degree in medicine and is led by a resident physician who has received a medical degree and is working in a teaching hospital under the supervision of experienced physicians.
Etymology
The term "residency" originated from the manner in which resident physicians primarily 'resided' in the hospitals several years ago, spending most of their time in the hospital premises during their training period.
Overview
During the residency period, the resident physician gains practical experience in a particular specialty, such as surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, or family medicine. The length of a residency program can vary from three to seven years, depending on the specialty.
Application Process
The application process for residency programs is highly competitive and involves several steps, including the submission of a medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and scores from the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX).
