International Medical Graduate (IMG)
International Medical Graduate (IMG), pronounced /ɪntərˈnæʃənəl ˈmɛdɪkəl ˈɡrædʒuət/, is a term used to describe a physician who has graduated from a medical school outside of the country where he or she intends to practice. The term is primarily used in the United States and Canada.
Etymology
The term "International Medical Graduate" is a combination of three words. "International" is derived from the Latin inter, meaning "between", and natio, meaning "nation". "Medical" comes from the Latin medicus, meaning "physician". "Graduate" is derived from the Latin gradus, meaning "step or degree".
