Sub-internship

Sub-internship (pronunciation: /sʌb-ˈin-tərn-ˈship/), also known as acting internship or sub-I, is a period of medical education where a medical student acts as an intern in a specific medical specialty. The term is primarily used in the United States and Canada.

Etymology

The term "sub-internship" is derived from the prefix "sub-" meaning "under" or "below", and "internship", referring to a period of work experience. Thus, a sub-internship is a period of work experience that is below the level of a full internship.

Description

During a sub-internship, medical students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a specific medical specialty. They are given responsibilities similar to those of an intern, but under the supervision of a resident or attending physician. This allows them to gain practical experience in patient care, diagnosis, and treatment, while also learning about the day-to-day responsibilities of a doctor in their chosen specialty.

Sub-internships are typically undertaken in the final year of medical school, after the student has completed their core clinical rotations. They are often seen as a way for students to demonstrate their skills and knowledge to potential residency programs, and can be an important factor in the residency matching process.
