History
The Hawaiian pizza was invented in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant to Canada, at his restaurant, the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham-Kent, Ontario. Despite its name, the pizza does not originate from Hawaii, but was named after the brand of canned pineapple that Panopoulos used.
Ingredients
The main ingredients of a Hawaiian pizza are a pizza base, tomato sauce, cheese, ham, and pineapple. The ham is usually in the form of Canadian bacon or bacon and the pineapple is typically canned, though fresh pineapple may also be used. Some variations may include additional ingredients such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or onions.
Reception
Hawaiian pizza has been the subject of controversy, with some people, including former Icelandic president Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, expressing a dislike for the combination of pineapple and pizza. However, it remains a popular choice in many parts of the world, particularly in Australia, where it is the most popular pizza topping.
