Gastrointestinal Cancer

Gastrointestinal cancer (pronounced: gas-tro-in-tes-ti-nal can-cer) refers to malignant conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) and accessory organs of digestion, including the esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus. The symptoms relate to the organ affected and can include obstruction (leading to difficulty swallowing or defecating), abnormal bleeding or other associated problems.

Etymology

The term "gastrointestinal" is derived from "gastro" (from Ancient Greek γαστήρ gaster, "stomach") and "intestinal" (from Latin intestinum, "gut"). "Cancer" is derived from the Latin word "cancer" meaning crab, due to the crab-like spread of the disease in the body.
