Bupropion hydrobromide
Bupropion hydrobromide (byoo-PROH-pee-on hy-droh-BROH-mide) is a type of antidepressant medication that is used to treat depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It is also used as a smoking cessation aid.
Etymology
The term "Bupropion" is derived from the chemical name of the drug, which is 3-chloro-N-tert-butyl-β-keto-α-methylphenethylamine. The "hydrobromide" part of the name refers to the hydrobromide salt form of the drug, which is used to increase its solubility for oral administration.
Pharmacology
Bupropion hydrobromide works by inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine, norepinephrine, and to a lesser extent, serotonin in the brain. This increases the amount of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft, which leads to improved mood and concentration.
