Behavioral disorder (pronounced: /bɪˈheɪvjərəl dɪsˈɔːdər/), also known as disruptive behavioral disorder, is a type of mental health disorder that affects a person's ability to behave in a socially acceptable manner.
Etymology
The term "behavioral disorder" is derived from the English words "behavior" and "disorder". "Behavior" comes from the late Middle English word "behaviour", which means manner of conducting oneself in the world. "Disorder" comes from the late Middle English word "disordre", which means lack of regular arrangement.
Definition
Behavioral disorders involve a pattern of disruptive behaviors in children that last for at least 6 months and cause problems in school, at home, and in social situations. These disorders can greatly affect a person's ability to learn and get along with others.
Types of Behavioral Disorders
There are several types of behavioral disorders, including:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): This disorder is characterized by ongoing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): This disorder is characterized by ongoing patterns of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior.
- Conduct Disorder: This disorder is characterized by ongoing patterns of violating the basic rights of others or major societal norms or rules.
