Clare College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Founded in 1326, it is the second-oldest surviving college of the university, after Peterhouse. The college was originally named University Hall, but was refounded in 1338 as Clare Hall by an endowment from Elizabeth de Clare, a granddaughter of Edward I.

Clare College was founded in 1326 by Richard Badew, the then Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. The college was initially named University Hall. In 1338, the college was refounded and endowed by Elizabeth de Clare, who was one of the wealthiest women in England at the time. The college was renamed Clare Hall in her honor. The name was shortened to Clare College in 1856.
Architecture[edit]
Clare College is renowned for its architecture, particularly its Old Court, which was built between 1638 and 1715. The college's Chapel was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1763. The Clare Bridge, which spans the River Cam, is the oldest of Cambridge's current bridges and was completed in 1640.
