Downing College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1800. The college was established through the will of Sir George Downing, 3rd Baronet, who left his estate to found a new college. The college is known for its distinctive neoclassical architecture and spacious grounds.
History
Downing College was founded in 1800, following the death of Sir George Downing, 3rd Baronet, who left his estate for the establishment of a new college. The college was intended to promote the study of law, medicine, and the humanities. The first buildings were designed by the architect William Wilkins.
Architecture
The college is renowned for its neoclassical architecture, which was a departure from the Gothic style that characterized many of the older colleges at Cambridge. The main buildings are arranged around a large quadrangle, known as the Quadrangle, which is one of the largest in Cambridge.
