Magdalene College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge in England. Founded in 1428 as a Benedictine hostel, it was later refounded in 1542 as a college by Thomas Audley, 1st Baron Audley of Walden. The college is noted for its beautiful architecture, rich history, and academic excellence.
History
Magdalene College has a long and storied history. Originally established as a hostel for Benedictine monks, it was known as the Monks' Hostel. In 1542, it was refounded by Thomas Audley, who was then the Lord Chancellor of England, and named after Mary Magdalene. The college has maintained its historical charm, with many of its buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
Architecture
The college is renowned for its picturesque setting along the River Cam and its historic buildings. The Pepys Library, which houses the personal library of Samuel Pepys, is one of the college's most famous features. The library contains a vast collection of rare books and manuscripts, including Pepys' diaries, which are an invaluable resource for historians.
Academic Life
Magdalene College offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It is known for its strong emphasis on the humanities and social sciences, although it also has a vibrant community of students studying the sciences. The college provides a supportive environment for academic pursuits, with a range of facilities and resources available to students.
Traditions
Magdalene College is steeped in tradition. One of its most famous traditions is the annual "Magdalene May Ball," a lavish event held every two years that attracts students and alumni from across the university. The college also has a strong rowing tradition, with its boat club competing in the annual May Bumps and Lent Bumps races.
