Founded in 1624, it is named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, then Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Pembroke College was founded in 1624 by King James I of England, with the assistance of Thomas Tesdale and Richard Wightwick. The college was named in honor of William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, who was the Chancellor of the University at the time. The college's original buildings were constructed around a medieval hall, which was part of Broadgates Hall, an earlier academic institution.
