Fitzwilliam College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. It was founded in 1869 as a non-collegiate institution for students who could not afford the costs of college membership. It became a full college of the university in 1966. The college is named after William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam, a benefactor of the university.
History
Fitzwilliam College began as the Non-Collegiate Students Board in 1869, providing an affordable education to students who could not afford the costs associated with college membership. In 1887, it moved to Fitzwilliam Hall on Trumpington Street, and in 1966, it was granted collegiate status and moved to its current location on Storey's Way.
Architecture
The college's main buildings are a mix of modern and traditional architecture. The Grove, a Georgian house, is one of the oldest buildings on the site. The college also features the Chapel, designed by Sir Edward Maufe, and the Olisa Library, which houses a significant collection of books and resources.
