Maternity Care
Maternity care (pronunciation: /məˈtɜːrnɪti keər/) is the health service provided to women, their partners, and their families from conception through to the postnatal period. It encompasses all aspects of antenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care.
Etymology
The term "maternity" comes from the Latin mater meaning "mother", and "care" from the Old English caru meaning "sorrow, anxiety, grief", which later evolved to mean "charge, oversight, attention or heed with a view to safety or protection".
Antenatal Care
Antenatal care (pronunciation: /æntɪˈneɪtəl keər/) is the regular health check-ups provided to the pregnant woman with the aim of ensuring the well-being of the mother and the healthy development of the fetus. It includes regular monitoring of the woman's health, screening tests, and educational information about pregnancy and childbirth.
Delivery Care
Delivery care (pronunciation: /dɪˈlɪvəri keər/) refers to the health services provided during childbirth. It includes monitoring of labor, pain management, support during childbirth, and immediate care of the newborn.
Postnatal Care
Postnatal care (pronunciation: /poʊstˈneɪtəl keər/) is the care provided to the mother and her newborn baby immediately after the birth and for the first six weeks of life. It includes monitoring of the mother's health, support for breastfeeding, and care of the newborn.
