Fetal monitoring
Fetal monitoring is a procedure in which the heart rate of a fetus is monitored during pregnancy and labor. This is done to ensure the health and safety of the fetus and to detect any potential problems that may arise.
Types of Fetal Monitoring
There are two main types of fetal monitoring: external and internal.
External Fetal Monitoring
External fetal monitoring involves the use of a device that is strapped to the mother's abdomen. This device uses Doppler ultrasound to detect the fetal heart rate and the mother's uterine contractions.
Internal Fetal Monitoring
Internal fetal monitoring involves the insertion of a thin electrode through the mother's vagina and cervix and onto the fetal scalp. This method is more accurate than external monitoring but is also more invasive.
Indications for Fetal Monitoring
Fetal monitoring is typically performed during labor and delivery, but it may also be used during pregnancy if there are concerns about the health of the fetus. Indications for fetal monitoring include:
- Preterm labor
- High-risk pregnancy
- Multiple pregnancy
- Preeclampsia
- Gestational diabetes
- Intrauterine growth restriction
- Decreased fetal movement
Risks and Complications
While fetal monitoring is generally safe, there are some risks and complications associated with the procedure. These include:
- Infection: This is a risk with internal fetal monitoring.
- Discomfort: Some women find the procedure uncomfortable.
- False positives: Fetal monitoring can sometimes suggest a problem when there isn't one, leading to unnecessary interventions.
Interpreting the Results
The results of fetal monitoring are interpreted by a healthcare provider. They will look for a normal, steady heart rate and regular contractions. If there are any abnormalities, further testing may be required.
