Mangoes (Mangifera indica)

Mangoes (pronounced: /ˈmæŋɡoʊ, ˈmæŋɡəʊ/), are a tropical fruit from the drupe family. This means they have a single large seed or stone in the middle. Sometimes called the "king of fruits," they're one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world.

Etymology

The word "mango" originated from the Malayalam word "māṅṅa" via Portuguese during spice trade with Kerala in 1498. The word's first recorded attestation in a European language was a text by Ludovico di Varthema in Italian in 1510, as Manga.

Description

Mangoes are juicy stone fruit from numerous species of tropical trees belonging to the flowering plant genus Mangifera, cultivated mostly for their edible fruit. The majority of these species are found in nature as wild mangoes. The genus belongs to the cashew family Anacardiaceae.

Cultivation and uses

Mangoes are grown in tropical climates all over the world. The fruit is consumed in multiple ways, such as in smoothies, salads, or as dried fruit. In addition to being eaten fresh, mangoes are also used to make jams, jellies, and preserves, and are a key ingredient in certain pickles and chutneys.

Health benefits

Mangoes are not only delicious but also incredibly healthy. They're a rich source of vitamins A and C, as well as fiber and antioxidants. Regular consumption of mangoes can aid digestion, boost immunity, and improve eye health.
