Columbia University is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in the United States. Founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of Great Britain, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. Over the centuries, Columbia has developed a rich tapestry of traditions that contribute to its unique campus culture.
Traditions
Columbia University is steeped in traditions that reflect its long history and vibrant student life. These traditions are celebrated by students, faculty, and alumni, and they play a significant role in fostering a sense of community and continuity.
The Varsity Show
The Varsity Show is one of Columbia's oldest traditions, dating back to 1894. It is an annual student-run musical that satirizes life at Columbia and features original music, lyrics, and scripts. The show is a major event on campus, drawing large audiences and involving students from all parts of the university.
Orgo Night
Orgo Night is a semi-annual event held on the night before the Organic Chemistry final exam. The Columbia University Marching Band performs a comedic show in Butler Library, poking fun at campus events, student life, and university administration. The tradition began in the 1970s and has become a beloved, if sometimes controversial, part of Columbia's culture.
The Tree-Lighting Ceremony
The Tree-Lighting Ceremony marks the beginning of the holiday season at Columbia. Held on the Morningside Heights campus, this event features the lighting of trees along College Walk, musical performances, and speeches by university officials. It is a time for students, faculty, and staff to come together and celebrate the spirit of the season.
Bacchanal
Bacchanal is an annual spring concert organized by students, featuring performances by popular artists and bands. It is one of the largest student events at Columbia, attracting thousands of attendees. The event is a highlight of the spring semester and is eagerly anticipated by the student body.
The Great Columbia Bake-Off
The Great Columbia Bake-Off is a newer tradition that brings together students, faculty, and staff in a friendly baking competition. Participants showcase their culinary skills, and the event fosters community spirit and camaraderie.
Class Day and Commencement
Class Day and Commencement are significant milestones for graduating students. Class Day is a ceremony specific to each school within the university, where students are recognized for their achievements. Commencement is a university-wide event held on the steps of Low Memorial Library, where degrees are conferred, and notable speakers address the graduates.
