Rutherfurd Observatory
Rutherfurd Observatory is an astronomical observatory located at Columbia University in New York City. It is named after Lewis Morris Rutherfurd, a pioneering astrophotographer and a trustee of Columbia University. The observatory is part of the Department of Astronomy and serves both educational and research purposes.
History
The Rutherfurd Observatory was established in the early 20th century, with its initial construction completed in 1927. It was built to replace the older Pupin Hall observatory, which had become outdated. The observatory was named in honor of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd, who made significant contributions to the field of astrophotography and was instrumental in the development of the observatory.
Facilities
The observatory is equipped with a variety of telescopes and instruments designed for both optical and radio astronomy. The primary telescope is a 12-inch refractor, which has been used for numerous research projects and educational purposes. The observatory also houses several smaller telescopes and a range of modern astronomical instruments.
Research and Education
Rutherfurd Observatory plays a crucial role in the research activities of the Department of Astronomy at Columbia University. It provides students and faculty with the opportunity to conduct observational research and engage in hands-on learning experiences. The observatory is also involved in public outreach programs, offering regular public viewing nights and educational events to promote interest in astronomy.
Notable Achievements
Over the years, Rutherfurd Observatory has been the site of many significant astronomical discoveries and research projects. It has contributed to the study of variable stars, planetary atmospheres, and the development of new astronomical techniques. The observatory's historical records and photographic plates are valuable resources for the study of the history of astronomy.
