Collio Goriziano or Collio is a wine and Italian Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. Collio Goriziano is named after the hills (colli) in the Gorizia area, which is known for its unique microclimate and soil conditions that are ideal for wine production.

History[edit]

The history of wine production in the Collio Goriziano region dates back to the time of the Romans. The region has been influenced by various cultures and civilizations over the centuries, including the Lombards, Venetians, and Habsburgs, each contributing to the development of the region's wine industry.

Geography and Climate[edit]

Collio Goriziano is located in the northeastern part of Italy, bordering Slovenia. The region is characterized by its hilly terrain, which provides excellent conditions for viticulture. The climate is classified as Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

Viticulture and Winemaking[edit]

The region is known for its white wines, which are made from a variety of grape varieties, including Pinot Grigio, Friulano, and Ribolla Gialla. The wines are typically full-bodied and aromatic, with a good balance of acidity and fruitiness. The region also produces red wines, primarily from the Merlot and Cabernet Franc grape varieties.

Wine Styles and Regulations[edit]

Under the DOC regulations, wines produced in the Collio Goriziano region must adhere to specific production rules. For example, white wines must contain at least 85% of the specified grape variety, while red wines must contain at least 70%. Additionally, the wines must be aged for a minimum period of time before they can be released for sale.

Food Pairing[edit]

Collio Goriziano wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of dishes. White wines are often served with seafood, poultry, and pasta dishes, while red wines are typically paired with red meat and game.
