Girton College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. It was established in 1869 as the first residential college for women in England. The college became coeducational in 1979.
History[edit]
Girton College was founded by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon in 1869. Initially, it was located in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, before moving to its current site in Girton, Cambridgeshire, in 1873. The college was named after the village of Girton, where it is situated.
Architecture[edit]
The main building of Girton College, known as the Main Building, is a Grade II* listed building. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, a prominent architect known for his work on the Natural History Museum, London. The college also features the Stanley Library, the Chapel, and the Lawrence Room, which houses a collection of antiquities.
