Columbia College is the oldest undergraduate college of Columbia University, a private Ivy League research university located in New York City. Established in 1754, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States.
History[edit]
Columbia College was originally founded as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain. The college was established to provide a classical education to young men of the colony of New York. The first classes were held in July 1754 and were conducted by the college's first president, Dr. Samuel Johnson.
During the American Revolutionary War, instruction was suspended in 1776, and the college's building was used as a military hospital and barracks. After the war, the college reopened in 1784 under the name Columbia College, reflecting the patriotic fervor that had inspired the nation's independence.
