Research

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

Research is a systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. It involves the collection, organization, and analysis of information to increase understanding of a topic or issue. A research project may be an expansion on past work in the field.

Types of Research[edit]

There are several types of research, including scientific research, social science research, artistic research, and humanities research, each of which can be further divided into many subtypes.

Scientific Research[edit]

Scientific research involves a systematic process that focuses on being objective and gathering a multitude of information for analysis so that the researcher can come to a conclusion. This process is used in all research and evaluation projects, regardless of the research method (scientific method of inquiry, evaluation research, or action research).

Social Science Research[edit]

Social science research examines the human aspects of the world. It includes a variety of research areas such as sociology, economics, political science, psychology, and many others.

Artistic Research[edit]

Artistic research, also seen as 'practice-based research', can take form when creative works are considered both the research and the object of research itself. It is the debatable body of thought which offers an alternative to purely scientific methods in research in its search for knowledge and truth.

Humanities Research[edit]

Humanities research is often interdisciplinary, involving the investigation of culture, history, art, music, language, philosophy, and many other areas.

Research Methods[edit]

Research methods are procedures for collecting and analyzing data. The choice of method often depends on what the researcher intends to investigate. For example, if the researcher is interested in exploring the lived experiences of individuals, they might choose qualitative research methods. If the researcher is interested in statistical significance, they might choose quantitative research methods.

Research Ethics[edit]

Research ethics involves the application of fundamental ethical principles to a variety of topics involving research, including scientific research. These include the design and implementation of research involving human experimentation, animal experimentation, various aspects of academic scandal, including scientific misconduct (such as fraud, fabrication of data and plagiarism), whistle blowing; regulation of research, etc.
