Newnham College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Founded in 1871, it was the second women's college to be established at Cambridge, following Girton College. Newnham College was founded by a group of individuals including Henry Sidgwick, a philosopher and economist, and Millicent Garrett Fawcett, a leading suffragist.

History[edit]

Newnham College was established to provide higher education for women at a time when they were not permitted to attend the University of Cambridge. The college began with a small group of students who were taught by private tutors. In 1875, the college moved to its current site on Sidgwick Avenue, where it has since expanded.

Architecture[edit]

The college buildings are noted for their distinctive red-brick architecture. The original buildings were designed by the architect Basil Champneys, and the college has continued to expand with new buildings and facilities over the years.
