Emma Thompson (born 15 April 1959) is a British actress, screenwriter, and author. She is known for her portrayals of strong female characters and her work in both comedy and drama. Thompson has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Early life

Thompson was born in Paddington, London, to Eric Thompson, a theatre director and actor, and Phyllida Law, a Scottish actress. She was educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she was a member of the Footlights troupe.

Career

Early work

Thompson's early career included roles in television series such as Tutti Frutti and Fortunes of War, for which she won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress.

Breakthrough and critical success

Thompson gained international recognition for her role in Howards End (1992), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She continued to receive critical acclaim for her performances in The Remains of the Day (1993) and Sense and Sensibility (1995), the latter of which she also wrote the screenplay, winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Later work

In the 2000s, Thompson appeared in films such as Love Actually (2003), Nanny McPhee (2005), and Stranger than Fiction (2006). She also portrayed Professor Sybill Trelawney in the Harry Potter series.

Personal life

Thompson was married to actor Kenneth Branagh from 1989 to 1995. She later married actor Greg Wise, with whom she has two children. Thompson is an advocate for various human rights and environmental causes.
