Violence against women (pronunciation: /ˈvaɪələns əˈɡenst ˈwɪmɪn/) refers to any act of Gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.
Etymology
The term "violence against women" is a direct translation of the phrase used in the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, adopted in 1993. The phrase itself is self-explanatory, with "violence" deriving from the Latin violentia, meaning "vehemence, impetuosity".
