Human Trafficking (hyoo-muhn traf-ik-ing) is a grave violation of human rights, involving the illegal trade of individuals for the purposes of forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of modern-day slavery.

Etymology

The term "Human Trafficking" is derived from the words "human", referring to a member of the Homo sapiens species, and "trafficking", which originates from the Italian word "traffico", meaning trade or traffic.

Definition

Human Trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of threat, use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.

Types of Human Trafficking

There are several types of Human Trafficking, including but not limited to:

  • Sex Trafficking: This involves the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, obtaining, patronizing, or soliciting of a person for the purposes of a commercial sex act, in which the commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is under 18 years of age.
  • Forced Labor: This involves the use of violence, threats, or coercion to force individuals to work against their will in many different industries.
  • Child Trafficking: This involves the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of a child for the purpose of exploitation.

Related Terms

  • Smuggling: Unlike human trafficking, smuggling involves the consent of the person being smuggled, who often pays large sums of money. The smuggler's role ends once the person has been transported to their destination.
  • Slavery: This is a system under which people are treated as property and are forced to work. Slavery has been abolished in most countries, but continues in some forms today.
  • Exploitation: This refers to the act of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work.
