Psychological Therapy

Psychological therapy (pronunciation: psy·cho·log·i·cal ther·a·py), also known as psychotherapy, is a general term for treating mental health problems by talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health provider.

Etymology

The term "psychological therapy" is derived from the Greek words "psyche," meaning soul, and "therapeia," meaning healing. Thus, the term essentially means "healing of the soul."

Types of Psychological Therapy

There are several types of psychological therapy, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This type of therapy helps individuals identify and change thought patterns that lead to harmful behaviors.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a type of CBT that teaches behavioral skills to help handle stress, manage emotions, and improve relationships.
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): This type of therapy focuses on improving communication patterns and how to relate to others.
  • Psychodynamic Therapy: This therapy focuses on understanding the impact of the past on current behavior.
  • Family Therapy: This therapy involves treating more than one member of the family at the same time to help the family resolve conflicts and improve interaction.
