The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University is an American institution dedicated to promoting and elevating the standards of journalism. Established in 1938, the foundation offers fellowships for journalists to study at Harvard and provides various programs and initiatives to support journalistic excellence.

History[edit]

The Nieman Foundation was founded in 1938 through a bequest by Agnes Wahl Nieman, the widow of Lucius W. Nieman, founder of The Milwaukee Journal. The foundation's mission is to "promote and elevate the standards of journalism and educate persons deemed specially qualified for journalism."

Nieman Fellowships[edit]

The Nieman Fellowships are the foundation's flagship program. Each year, the foundation selects a group of journalists from around the world to spend an academic year at Harvard. During this time, Nieman Fellows have the opportunity to take classes, conduct research, and participate in various seminars and workshops. The fellowship aims to provide journalists with the intellectual resources and time needed to pursue individual projects and enhance their professional skills.

Programs and Initiatives[edit]

In addition to the fellowship program, the Nieman Foundation offers several other initiatives to support journalism:

  • Nieman Reports: A quarterly magazine that covers contemporary issues in journalism and features articles by Nieman Fellows and other prominent journalists.
  • Nieman Storyboard: A website dedicated to the art and craft of narrative journalism, featuring interviews, essays, and examples of outstanding storytelling.
  • Nieman Lab: An online publication that explores the future of journalism in the digital age, focusing on innovation and new business models.
