Srikant Datar

Srikant Datar is an Indian-American economist and academic administrator, currently serving as the Dean of Harvard Business School (HBS). He is known for his contributions to the field of cost management and management education, and has authored several influential books and articles on the subject.

Early Life and Education

Srikant Datar was born in India. He completed his undergraduate degree in statistics from the University of Mumbai. He then moved to the United States to pursue further education, earning a postgraduate diploma in business management from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA). Datar holds two master's degrees and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.

Career

Before joining Harvard Business School, Datar had an illustrious career in academia and business. He served on the faculty of Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University, where he taught accounting and finance. At HBS, he has held the role of faculty chair for several of its executive education programs and has been instrumental in developing innovative teaching methods and curricula.

In January 2021, Datar was appointed as the Dean of Harvard Business School, succeeding Nitin Nohria. As Dean, he has emphasized the importance of creating leaders who make a difference in the world, fostering an environment of inclusion, and enhancing the role of business education in society.

Contributions and Impact

Datar's research focuses primarily on cost management and control, and he has been a pioneer in introducing new pedagogical approaches in the field of management education. His work has had a significant impact on how accounting and business are taught in business schools around the world. He is also the co-author of several books, including the leading cost accounting textbook, "Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis," which is used in graduate and undergraduate courses globally.
