Harvard Extension School is one of the twelve degree-granting schools of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, along with professional certificates and a premedical program. The school is known for its open enrollment policy, which allows students from around the world to take courses without the need for formal admission.

History

Harvard Extension School was founded in 1910 to extend Harvard's resources to the community. It was initially part of the Division of Continuing Education and has grown significantly over the years, now offering over 900 courses in more than 60 fields of study.

Academics

The school offers a variety of programs, including:

Bachelor of Liberal Arts (ALB)

The ALB program is designed for adult learners and requires a combination of on-campus and online courses. Students must complete 128 credits, including general education, concentration, and elective courses.

Master of Liberal Arts (ALM)

The ALM program offers degrees in fields such as Biotechnology, Information Technology, Management, and Sustainability. Students must complete 48 credits, including a thesis or capstone project.

Professional Graduate Certificates

These certificates are designed for professionals looking to enhance their skills in specific areas. They typically require four to five courses and can be completed online or on-campus.

Premedical Program

The premedical program prepares students for medical school admission. It includes courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, along with advising and support services.

Admissions

Harvard Extension School has an open enrollment policy for most courses, meaning that students do not need to apply for admission to take individual courses. However, degree programs have specific admission requirements, including completion of certain courses with a minimum grade point average.
