Cabot House

Cabot House is one of the twelve undergraduate residential houses at Harvard College, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is part of the Harvard House system, which was established to provide a supportive and enriching residential experience for students.
History[edit]
Cabot House was established in 1970, originally as South House, and was renamed in 1984 in honor of Thomas Dudley Cabot and Virginia Wellington Cabot, prominent benefactors of Harvard University. The house is composed of several buildings, including Briggs Hall, Barnard Hall, and Whitman Hall, which were originally part of Radcliffe College before its merger with Harvard.
Architecture[edit]
The architecture of Cabot House reflects a blend of historical and modern styles. The buildings feature traditional brick facades and are arranged around courtyards that provide communal spaces for students. The house includes various facilities such as dining halls, common rooms, and study spaces.
Community and Traditions[edit]
Cabot House is known for its strong sense of community and vibrant traditions. The house hosts numerous events throughout the academic year, including formal dances, intramural sports, and cultural celebrations. One of the most notable traditions is the annual Cabot House Musical, which is entirely student-produced and showcases the talents of its residents.
Administration[edit]
The house is led by a Faculty Dean, who is responsible for the overall administration and well-being of the residents. The Faculty Dean is supported by a team of Resident Tutors, who provide academic and personal support to students. The house also has a House Committee (HoCo), which organizes social events and represents the interests of the residents.
Notable Alumni[edit]
Cabot House has produced many notable alumni who have gone on to achieve success in various fields. Some of the distinguished alumni include:
- Yo-Yo Ma, renowned cellist
- Natalie Portman, Academy Award-winning actress
- Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and scientist
