== Geography of Guinea-Bissau ==

Guinea-Bissau is a country located in West Africa. It is bordered by Senegal to the north, Guinea to the south and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The country covers an area of approximately 36,125 square kilometers (13,948 square miles), making it one of the smaller countries in Africa.

Topography

The topography of Guinea-Bissau is generally low-lying, with its highest point being an unnamed location in the northeast, which reaches an elevation of 300 meters (984 feet). The country is characterized by a coastal plain that rises gradually to a plateau in the east. The coastal region is dotted with numerous mangrove swamps and estuaries.

Climate

Guinea-Bissau has a tropical climate with a distinct wet and dry season. The wet season lasts from June to November and is influenced by the West African Monsoon. During this period, the country experiences heavy rainfall and high humidity. The dry season, from December to May, is characterized by lower humidity and cooler temperatures, with the Harmattan wind bringing dry and dusty conditions from the Sahara Desert.

Rivers and Water Bodies

The country is traversed by several major rivers, including the Geba River, the Cacheu River, and the Corubal River. These rivers play a crucial role in the country's agriculture and transportation. The Bijagós Archipelago, a group of about 88 islands and islets, lies off the coast of Guinea-Bissau and is known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems.

Natural Resources

Guinea-Bissau is endowed with various natural resources, including bauxite, phosphate, and petroleum. The country also has significant fishing resources, with its coastal waters being rich in fish and other marine life.

Environmental Issues

The country faces several environmental challenges, including deforestation, soil erosion, and overfishing. Efforts are being made to address these issues through various conservation and sustainable development initiatives.

Administrative Divisions

Guinea-Bissau is divided into eight regions and one autonomous sector. The regions are Bafatá Region, Biombo Region, Bissau Region, Bolama Region, Cacheu Region, Gabu Region, Oio Region, and Tombali Region. The autonomous sector is the capital city, Bissau.
