Madeira is an archipelago situated in the north Atlantic Ocean, southwest of Portugal. Its total population was estimated at 267,785 in 2016. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island's south coast.

History

The archipelago of Madeira was discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1419 and became an important stopover for merchant ships traveling to Africa and the Americas. The islands were initially settled by Portuguese people, especially farmers from the Minho region, who introduced Madeira wine, a fortified wine that has become famous worldwide.
