Eyes
Eyes
Eyes (pronunciation: /aɪz/) are the organs of vision. They detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. The simplest photoreceptor cells in conscious vision connect light to movement.
Etymology
The word "eye" comes from the Old English "ēage," which is believed to stem from the Proto-Germanic "*augon," meaning "eye" or "to see."
Anatomy of the Eye
The human eye is a complex organ which includes such parts as the cornea, pupil, lens, retina, and optic nerve. Each part plays a vital role in providing clear vision.
- Cornea - The clear front surface of the eye that helps to focus light, or an image, on the retina.
- Pupil - The black circular opening in the iris that lets light in.
- Lens - The transparent structure inside the eye that focuses light rays onto the retina.
- Retina - The light-sensitive tissue lining at the back of the eye.
- Optic Nerve - The nerve that transmits electrical impulses from the retina to the brain.
