Cinacalcet
Cinacalcet
Cinacalcet (pronounced as /ˌsɪnəˈkælsɛt/) is a medication that is used primarily in the treatment of hyperparathyroidism, a condition characterized by an overactive parathyroid gland.
Etymology
The term "Cinacalcet" is derived from the chemical name of the drug, which is N-[1-(R)-(-)-(1-naphthyl)ethyl]-3-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1-aminopropane hydrochloride. The name is a combination of parts of the chemical name, with "Cina-" coming from "1-naphthyl" and "-calcet" from "calcium".
Usage
Cinacalcet is used to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism in adults with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. It is also used to treat high levels of calcium in the blood of adults with parathyroid carcinoma, a rare type of cancer.
Mechanism of Action
Cinacalcet works by decreasing the amount of parathyroid hormone (PTH) that the body produces. PTH is responsible for regulating the amount of calcium in the body. By reducing the production of PTH, Cinacalcet helps to lower the levels of calcium in the blood.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Cinacalcet include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious side effects can include low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) and high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia).
