Barbell

A barbell is a piece of exercise equipment used in weight training, bodybuilding, weightlifting and powerlifting, consisting of a long bar with weights attached at each end. Barbells are used for a wide range of exercise, both in professional settings like gyms and fitness centers, and in personal home gyms. The primary use of a barbell is for lifting weights in order to improve strength, muscle mass, and overall fitness.

The concept of the barbell dates back to the early 19th century, where it was used in strongman training before becoming mainstream in physical culture and eventually competitive sports. The design of the barbell has evolved over time from simple bars with fixed weights to the modern adjustable versions with removable weight plates.

Types of Barbells[edit]

  • Olympic Barbell: Used in Olympic weightlifting, this type of barbell is about 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) long and weighs 20 kilograms (44 lbs). It has rotating sleeves on the ends to reduce the torque on the lifter's wrists and arms.
  • Standard Barbell: Typically shorter and lighter than the Olympic barbell, standard barbells are common in home gyms. They do not have rotating sleeves.
  • EZ Bar: Designed with a zigzag shape to allow for a more comfortable grip, the EZ bar is primarily used for exercises that target the biceps and triceps.
  • Trap Bar: Also known as a hex bar, this type of barbell is shaped like a hexagon and allows the lifter to stand inside it. It is used mainly for deadlifts and shrugs.
