Exercise equipment (/ˈɛksəsaɪz ɪˈkwɪpmənt/) refers to any device or apparatus used during physical activity to enhance the strength or conditioning effects of that exercise by providing either fixed or adjustable amounts of resistance, or to otherwise enhance the experience or outcome of an exercise routine.
Etymology
The term "exercise equipment" is derived from the English words "exercise" meaning to engage in physical activity to become stronger and healthier, and "equipment" which refers to the necessary items for a particular purpose.
Types of Exercise Equipment
Exercise equipment can be broadly classified into two types: Cardiovascular equipment and Strength equipment.
- Cardiovascular equipment is used for aerobic exercise which increases heart rate, lung efficiency and burns fat. Examples include Treadmill, Elliptical trainer, Stationary bicycle, Rowing machine, and Stair climber.
- Strength equipment is used for anaerobic exercise which helps in muscle building and increasing strength. Examples include Weight machine, Free weights, Resistance bands, and Exercise bench.
