Bodybuilding (/ˈbɒdiˌbɪldɪŋ/) is a sport that involves progressive resistance exercise to control and develop one's musculature (muscle building) by muscle hypertrophy for aesthetic purposes. It is distinct from similar activities such as powerlifting because it focuses on physical appearance instead of strength.

Etymology

The term "bodybuilding" is a compound of "body" and "building". The word "body" comes from the Old English bodig, which originally meant "trunk" or "torso". The term "building" comes from the Old English byldan, meaning "to construct".

History

Bodybuilding as a sport and as a method of physical conditioning dates back to ancient Greece, where it was considered an important part of a well-rounded education. The modern practice of bodybuilding began in the late 19th century with the advent of strongmen like Eugen Sandow, who is often referred to as the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding".

Training

Bodybuilding training typically involves a high volume of resistance exercises targeting all major muscle groups. The goal is to stimulate muscle growth through cellular damage and subsequent repair. This is achieved through a combination of weight lifting, cardiovascular exercise, and a specific diet.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is crucial in bodybuilding. Bodybuilders often follow a high-protein, moderate-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. They also consume a variety of supplements to aid in muscle recovery and growth, such as protein powders, amino acids, and creatine.

Competitions

Bodybuilding competitions are events where participants are judged on their physical appearance. This can include muscularity, symmetry, and stage presence. The most prestigious bodybuilding competition is the Mr. Olympia, which has been held annually since 1965.
