Weight Training

Weight training (/weɪt ˈtreɪnɪŋ/) is a common type of strength training for developing the strength and size of skeletal muscles. It utilizes the force of gravity in the form of weighted bars, dumbbells or weight stacks in order to oppose the force generated by muscle through concentric or eccentric contraction.

Etymology

The term "weight training" is derived from the practice of lifting heavy weights, which are often simply referred to as "weights". The word "training" refers to the process of teaching or learning a particular skill or type of behavior.
