Chick culling

Chick culling is the process of separating and disposing of unwanted (male and unhealthy female) chicks for which the intensive animal farming industry has no use. It involves methods like maceration (using a high speed grinder) and gassing.

Background

Chick culling is a common practice in poultry farming, particularly in the production of chickens and turkeys. The industry breeds chickens for two primary purposes: egg production and meat production. However, only female chickens (hens) are capable of laying eggs, and certain breeds known as broilers are most efficient for meat production.
