Howard Lyman is an American farmer and animal rights activist, known for his advocacy against factory farming and for promoting a plant-based diet. He gained significant attention for his appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996, where he discussed the dangers of mad cow disease and the practices of the meat industry.

Early Life and Education

Howard Lyman was born on September 17, 1938, in Great Falls, Montana. He grew up on a family farm and later attended Montana State University, where he earned a degree in agricultural science.

Career

Lyman initially worked as a conventional farmer, using chemical fertilizers and pesticides. However, after experiencing health issues and witnessing the environmental damage caused by these practices, he transitioned to organic farming. He eventually became a vocal critic of factory farming and an advocate for sustainable agriculture.

The Oprah Winfrey Show

In 1996, Lyman appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show alongside Oprah Winfrey to discuss the risks associated with mad cow disease. His statements led to a lawsuit filed by Texas cattlemen against both Lyman and Winfrey, known as the "Texas Beef Group v. Winfrey" case. The case was ultimately dismissed in 1998.

Advocacy and Writing

Howard Lyman is the author of several books, including Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat and No More Bull!. He is also a frequent speaker at events promoting animal rights, veganism, and environmental sustainability.

Personal Life

Lyman continues to be active in the animal rights and environmental movements. He resides in Ellensburg, Washington with his wife.
