Veneers

Veneers (/vəˈnɪərz/) are a type of dental prosthetic used to improve the appearance of teeth. They are thin shells, typically made of porcelain or composite resin, that are bonded to the front of the teeth.

Etymology

The term 'veneer' originates from the Middle English word 'furner', which means 'to furnish'. It was later influenced by the French word 'fournir', which means 'to provide or supply'. In the context of dentistry, veneers 'furnish' the teeth with a new surface.

Types of Veneers

There are two main types of veneers: porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers.

  • Porcelain Veneers: These are custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth. They are more stain-resistant and mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth better than composite resin veneers.
  • Composite Resin Veneers: These are made from a tooth-colored filling material bonded to the tooth. They require less tooth enamel removal and fewer visits to the dentist as compared to porcelain veneers.

Related Terms

  • Dental Bonding: This is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, ultimately bonding the material to the tooth to improve a person's smile.
  • Lumineers: These are a type of porcelain veneer that are so thin they can often be placed without removing any tooth structure.
  • Dental Crown: This is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance.
  • Dental Bridge: This is a structure, consisting of two crowns for the teeth on either side of a gap, and a false tooth/teeth in between.
