Trophoblastic Neoplasm

Trophoblastic neoplasm (pronunciation: troh-foh-blas-tik nee-oh-plaz-uhm) is a type of cancer that originates from the trophoblast, the outermost layer of cells in the embryo that provides nutrients to the developing fetus and forms a large part of the placenta.

Etymology

The term "trophoblastic" is derived from the Greek words "trophe" meaning nourishment, and "blastos" meaning germ. "Neoplasm" is derived from the Greek "neo" meaning new, and "plasma" meaning formation. Thus, "trophoblastic neoplasm" refers to a new formation or growth that originates from the nourishing germ layer of the embryo.

Types

There are several types of trophoblastic neoplasms, including:

  • Hydatidiform mole: A benign form of trophoblastic neoplasm that involves abnormal growth of the placenta.
  • Choriocarcinoma: A malignant form of trophoblastic neoplasm that can occur after a normal pregnancy, miscarriage, or molar pregnancy.
  • Placental site trophoblastic tumor: A rare form of trophoblastic neoplasm that arises from the site where the placenta was attached to the uterus.

Symptoms

Symptoms of trophoblastic neoplasms can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease, but may include abnormal vaginal bleeding, an enlarged uterus, and high levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of trophoblastic neoplasms typically involves a combination of ultrasound imaging, blood tests to measure hCG levels, and a biopsy of the uterine tissue.

Treatment

Treatment options for trophoblastic neoplasms can include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, depending on the type and stage of the disease.
